Puppy School in Shellharbour, NSW
An accredited four-week puppy school running out of Lake Illawarra, built for Shellharbour families who want to raise the dog they'll actually want to live with.
The Shellharbour puppy lifestyle
Shellharbour is a young-family suburb with a high dog ownership rate. Big backyards, beach access at Warilla and Killalea, and a strong walking culture along Lake Illawarra. The puppies we see here have plenty of physical opportunity from day one, which is great. The risk is that physical opportunity outpaces mental training, and by six months you've got an athletic teenager dog who can't settle inside the house.
Puppy school is where you balance those two things: give the puppy the exposure they need to thrive in a beachside lifestyle, while teaching the calm and clarity that prevents the predictable adolescent meltdown.
What our Shellharbour puppy school covers
Walkys Puppy School is a four-week structured program for puppies 8 to 16 weeks old. Classes run from our Lake Illawarra academy on Commerce Drive, easy to reach from Shellharbour City, Albion Park, Oak Flats, Warilla, and Mount Warrigal.
What you'll learn together:
- Settle and place training. The most important skill for a beach-and-backyard lifestyle.
- Foundation obedience: sit, drop, come, leash basics, name recognition.
- Structured socialisation in a controlled environment.
- House manners: toileting, crate training, calm greetings, no jumping on guests.
- How to read your puppy's body language so you can prevent problems before they start.
What's different about how we run it
Most puppy schools focus on "things the puppy can do." Ours focuses on "the dog they're going to become." The difference shows up six to twelve months later, when most puppies hit adolescence and start to test boundaries. Ours don't, because we built the calm and structure in from the start.
This is part of The Walkys Method: a system of clarity, calm, and fulfilment that runs through every program we offer. Puppy school is the entry point, but the principles carry through to whatever you do with your dog next.
What Shellharbour puppy parents commonly tell us
The pattern from this area is fairly specific.
"He gets all the beach time in the world and he's still wired." Almost always a calm-training gap, not an exercise gap. We teach the puppy that downtime is a skill too.
"She's great with our dogs but loses her mind at the cafe." Common in puppies who only get social practice with familiar dogs. We rebuild it from the foundation in a structured class.
"He chases the kids and the bikes." Drive that needs an outlet, plus impulse control work. Both are part of the standard program.
How to enrol
Classes run from our Lake Illawarra academy at Shop 4/2 Commerce Drive. New intakes start most months. We cap class sizes deliberately to keep the room calm and the trainer attention high per puppy.

If you'd like to talk before enrolling, book a free 30-minute call with Nath. We'll tell you whether puppy school is the right starting point for your dog or whether something else (private training, a workshop, just some advice) would suit better.
