Private Dog Training in Shellharbour, NSW
In-home or in-academy one-on-one dog training across Shellharbour, Albion Park, Oak Flats, Warilla, Lake Illawarra, and Mount Warrigal. Built for the specific problems group classes can't fix.
Why private training, instead of group classes
The Shellharbour-and-surrounds area has a lot of dogs and a fair few group obedience options. Group classes are great when the issue is foundation skills. They're not great when the issue is specific to your dog, your household, your environment, or your dog's history.
That's where private dog training comes in. One-on-one. Tailored to your situation. Faster results, because the entire session is about your dog and not the seven other dogs in the room.
How private training works in Shellharbour
You can choose between two delivery formats:
In-home sessions. We come to you, anywhere in Shellharbour, Albion Park, Oak Flats, Warilla, Mount Warrigal, Flinders, Calderwood, or surrounds. This is the right choice when the problems happen in your home or your local environment (door manners, leash walking near your usual routes, multi-dog dynamics in your specific household).
Academy sessions. Our Lake Illawarra location on Commerce Drive is set up specifically for focused training. Best for dogs who need controlled exposure to other dogs and people, or for owners who want hands-on coaching in a low-distraction environment first.
What we commonly work on with Shellharbour clients
The behavioural patterns from this part of the Illawarra are slightly different from inland or central Wollongong:
Reactivity on beach walks. The Shellharbour coast is busy with off-leash dogs, especially weekends. Reactive dogs get triggered fast and recover slow. We work specifically on rebuilding their composure in those settings.
Wired-after-the-beach syndrome. Long beach runs that should tire the dog out actually wind them up, and by evening they're worse than they started. Almost always a calm-training problem, not an exercise problem.
Toddler-and-puppy household dynamics. Common locally, because so many Shellharbour families have both. We work on impulse control, no-jumping rules, and safe spaces for both ends of the household.
Newly adopted rescues. We see a lot of rescue dogs settling into Shellharbour homes. Private training is the fastest way to set them up for the next ten years.
Pre-PAT work for assistance dogs. If you're working toward NDIS public access certification, the early skills get built one-on-one.
How we approach every session
Every private session uses The Walkys Method: a system of clarity, calm, and fulfilment built across hundreds of Illawarra dogs. Sessions are structured around what your specific dog needs, not a generic curriculum.
You leave every session with a written plan for the week, a clear set of drills, and honest feedback about what's working. We'll also tell you when private training isn't the right format. If your dog actually needs the 4-Week Calm Kickstart, or a group class, or a workshop instead, we'll say so.
What it costs and how to book
Private Dog Training is priced per session with package discounts for multi-session work. Most Shellharbour clients book a 3 to 5 session block for behaviour-specific issues; some only need one or two.
