Puppy School in Wollongong, NSW
A four-week puppy school in Wollongong run by accredited trainers, designed to build a calm, confident dog from the very first weeks at home.
The right start, in the right town
Wollongong is a great town to raise a puppy, and a tricky one. Between the city beach foreshore, the Blue Mile walking track, the university crowds at North Gong, and the constant flow of cafe dogs along Crown Street, your puppy is going to meet more people, more dogs, and more situations in their first six months than many country puppies meet in a year.
That breadth of exposure is a gift if you handle it well. Done poorly, it's the fastest way to create a reactive, over-aroused dog by the time they're nine months old. Puppy school is how you front-load the work so the first year sets the dog up for the next fifteen.
What our Wollongong puppy school covers
Walkys Puppy School is a four-week structured program for puppies aged roughly 8 to 16 weeks. It runs out of our Unanderra academy (just south of central Wollongong) and is led by an accredited trainer with hundreds of Illawarra puppies behind them.
What you'll learn together:
- Calm and settle work, before anything else. A puppy who can switch off is a puppy who'll grow into an easy adult dog.
- Foundation cues: sit, drop, recall, leash basics.
- Safe, controlled socialisation around other puppies in a structured environment, not a chaotic dog park.
- Toileting, crate training, and night-time routines.
- Body language reading, so you can predict what your puppy will do before they do it.
What's different about how we run it
Most Wollongong puppy schools run an hour-long group class once a week and call it a course. We do more than that. Our four-week program builds skills sequentially, includes structured downtime work (which most puppy schools skip entirely), and gives you a written plan you take home and apply between sessions.
This is part of The Walkys Method: calm first, clarity always, fulfilment as the foundation. We don't just teach your puppy what to do. We teach you why it works, so you can keep training them for the rest of their life.
What Wollongong owners commonly tell us
The patterns we hear from new puppy parents in this area are remarkably consistent.
"He's only calm when he's asleep." Common in younger puppies whose owners haven't taught a deliberate settle yet. We fix this in week one.
"She pulls toward every dog we see at the foreshore." Standard puppy issue, but Wollongong's high-density dog environments make it worse faster than in quieter towns. We teach engagement work specifically for these crowded walks.
"The house is full of holes from her chewing." Almost always a fulfilment problem, not a behaviour one. Solved by changing how the puppy's week is structured, not by more training.
How to enrol
Classes run from our Unanderra location, just off the Princes Highway, ten minutes south of central Wollongong. New intakes start most months. Class size is capped to keep the learning environment calm and individual.
