Why puppy school matters in Kiama

Raising a puppy in Kiama is a great experience and a strangely demanding one. Werri Beach off-lead. The Coast Walk's busy Saturday traffic. Cafe culture on Manning Street that expects your dog to settle at your feet. Plenty of weekend tourists with their own dogs running through your routine. A puppy raised here meets more dogs and more situations by six months than many country puppies meet in a year.

That broad exposure is either the best thing for them or the fastest way to create a reactive teenager. Puppy school is how you make sure it's the first one.

What our puppy school covers

Walkys Puppy School is a structured four-week program for puppies 8 to 16 weeks old. Classes run from our Unanderra academy in Wollongong, roughly a 25-minute drive north of Kiama up the M1.

What you'll learn together:

• Calm and settle work, before anything else.
• Foundation cues: sit, drop, recall, leash basics.
• Structured socialisation with other puppies in a controlled environment, not the chaos of a public dog park.
• Toileting, crate training, and night-time routines.
• How to read your puppy's body language so you can predict problems before they start.

The Kiama puppy lifestyle

The Kiama families we've trained tend to have a few common things going on. The puppy meets a lot of off-lead dogs from a young age. They learn early that beach and cafe are part of normal life. And they often live in homes that aren't dog-proofed for the first time in years.

That mix is fantastic for the right-trained puppy and miserable for the under-trained one. We tailor the class so the calm and impulse-control work happens first, because those are the skills a beach-and-cafe puppy needs before they need any obedience.
