Assistance Dog Training in Sydney & NSW
Owner-trained assistance dog certification for Sydney, Greater Sydney, Newcastle, the Hunter, the Illawarra, the Central Coast, and regional NSW. NDIS-approved. Delivered through online consultation with Public Access Test at our Illawarra academy.
Why a Sydney/NSW-specific pathway works well
NSW is the home state for Walkys. Our academies are at Lake Illawarra and Unanderra, roughly 90 minutes south of central Sydney. For Sydney-based handlers, that proximity matters because the final Public Access Test (PAT) is delivered in person, and being able to drive down (or train down) for a one-day assessment is a real advantage compared to interstate clients.
For regional NSW clients (Newcastle, Hunter, Central Coast, Mid North Coast, Illawarra, South Coast, Riverina, New England), the geography is also workable. We coordinate PAT days and intensive training around your schedule.
How NSW assistance dog access works
NSW recognises assistance dogs accredited under the Companion Animals Act 1998 and the federal Disability Discrimination Act 1992. A successfully certified Walkys assistance dog (passing PAT and maintaining annual reassessment) is entitled to public access rights across NSW.
We're not lawyers and access law evolves, so we always recommend confirming current requirements with Service NSW and your support coordinator before relying on access in specific contexts.
The pathway
Same five-step program we deliver Australia-wide:
- Initial Consultation (online or in-person at NSW academy)
- Suitability Test
- Private Training Sessions
- Public Training Sessions
- Public Access Test (PAT)
- Ongoing: Annual Reassessment
For full program details, see the Walkys Assistance Dog Development Program.
NDIS funding for NSW clients
Walkys is an NDIS-approved provider. NSW NDIS participants whose plans identify an assistance dog as reasonable and necessary support can typically claim:
- Initial Consultation and Suitability Test
- Private and Public Training Sessions
- Public Access Test fees
- Annual Reassessment
We support NDIA-managed and plan-managed funding arrangements. If you're unsure whether assistance dog work is in scope for your plan, raise it with your NDIA planner or support coordinator before booking.
What we offer Sydney clients specifically
Most Sydney clients combine online private training sessions with monthly travel days at our Illawarra academy. The drive down the Princes Highway from southern Sydney is roughly 75 to 90 minutes. Public transport is workable too via train to Wollongong.
Common practice for Sydney clients:
- Weekly online private training sessions with Nath during the foundation phase.
- Monthly in-person academy day for hands-on coaching, equipment fitting, and structured exposure work.
- Coordinated PAT day in NSW once the dog is ready.
