Assistance Dog Training in Perth & Western Australia
Owner-trained assistance dog certification for Perth and regional WA. NDIS-approved. Delivered remotely from NSW with coordinated in-person Public Access Test assessment.
Working with WA from the east coast
Walkys is based in NSW. Perth handlers are roughly 3,300 kilometres and three flying hours from our academy. Despite the distance, we work with WA clients regularly, because the bulk of owner-trained assistance dog work happens in your own environment, not in a training facility.
The structure that makes WA workable:
- Initial Consultation, Suitability Test, and weekly private training sessions are delivered online via Zoom.
- You do the daily training, in-public exposure, and skill building in your local Perth or regional WA environment.
- For the PAT, you fly into Sydney for a coordinated assessment day at our Illawarra academy, or we work with you to find a WA-based assessor whose standards align with the Walkys pathway.
Most Perth clients plan one or two trips to NSW across the 12 to 24 month program for intensive hands-on work, with all other training delivered remotely.
WA access context
Western Australia operates under the Dog Act 1976 and protects assistance dog handlers under state and federal anti-discrimination legislation. The Disability Discrimination Act 1992 applies nationally, so a Walkys-certified assistance dog retains public access rights wherever in Australia you travel.
WA-specific requirements can change. We recommend confirming current state requirements with the WA Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and your support coordinator.
The pathway
- Initial Consultation (online via Zoom)
- Suitability Test
- Private Training Sessions
- Public Training Sessions
- Public Access Test (PAT)
- Ongoing: Annual Reassessment

NDIS funding for WA clients
Walkys is an NDIS-approved provider. NDIS funding doesn't change between states; if your plan identifies an assistance dog as reasonable and necessary support, the relevant components can be claimed regardless of where in Australia you live or where your trainer is based.
We provide the documentation your support coordinator needs and work with NDIA-managed, plan-managed, and self-managed funding arrangements.
