Assistance Dog Training in Brisbane & Queensland

Owner-trained assistance dog certification for Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, Cairns, Townsville, and regional Queensland. NDIS-approved. Delivered remotely with coordinated in-person Public Access Test assessment.

Queensland's specific assistance dog landscape

Queensland has the most structured state-level assistance dog certification scheme in Australia under the Guide, Hearing and Assistance Dogs Act 2009. Queensland operates a formal certification program through accredited trainers, alongside recognition of assistance dogs certified under federal standards.

For Queensland-based handlers training their own dog through Walkys, the key things to know are:

  • Federal protections under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 apply to your dog wherever in Australia you travel.
  • Queensland's state-level scheme has additional requirements for full state-issued accreditation. We can advise on the pathway during your Initial Consultation.
  • Some Queensland public-access situations specifically prefer or require state-level accreditation.

Access law is technical and evolves, so we always recommend cross-checking current requirements with the Queensland Department of Communities, Housing and Digital Economy and your support coordinator.

How we work with Brisbane and Queensland clients

Walkys does not have a Queensland physical location. We deliver the program remotely from NSW, with one or two travel-down options for intensive hands-on work. The Initial Consultation, Suitability Test, and most private training sessions are video-based.

For PAT and any state-level certification requirement, we coordinate with you on the appropriate path:

  • Travel to our NSW academy for a coordinated PAT day.
  • Work with you to align Walkys' training with a Queensland-based assessor where state accreditation is the goal.

The pathway

  1. Initial Consultation (online via Zoom)
  2. Suitability Test
  3. Private Training Sessions
  4. Public Training Sessions
  5. Public Access Test (PAT)
  6. Ongoing: Annual Reassessment

NDIS funding for Queensland clients

Walkys is an NDIS-approved provider. NDIS funding does not change between states. We work with NDIA-managed, plan-managed, and self-managed clients across Queensland and provide the documentation your support coordinator will need.

What Brisbane and SEQ clients commonly do

  • Weekly online private training sessions during the foundation phase.
  • Local in-public exposure work coached remotely.
  • One to two travel-down weekends for intensive hands-on training.
  • Coordinated PAT assessment at the right state-appropriate location.
