Why Is My Border Collie So Naughty? Underemployed, Not Bad
Your border collie herds the kids, shreds the couch and stares at you like you owe them money. So you call them naughty. Here's the harder truth: they aren't bad, they're underemployed. A bored border collie is a dog with a job description and no job.
Why is my border collie so naughty?
Breeds were built for work. Border collies were built to watch, stalk, gather and problem-solve for hours across paddocks. Cattle dogs, kelpies, shepherds and retrievers carry the same wiring. Put that dog in a suburban backyard with two walks a day and the drive doesn't vanish. It goes looking for an outlet.
That outlet is usually chasing bikes, nipping heels, barking at the fence or digging up your lawn. The behaviour isn't random. It's the breed's job, done badly, in the wrong place.
Why doesn't more exercise fix a working breed?
Because the legs aren't the problem. Throw a ball for an hour and you often create a fitter, more wired dog who wants more. Physical work alone leaves the brain untouched.
In the Walkys 5 Pillars, exercise is only one of five. A working breed also needs real stimulation, clear training and structure. If one pillar is empty, the dog fills the gap itself. You won't like how.
What does a job look like in suburbia?
You don't need a farm. You need tasks that use the same instincts: watching, searching, thinking, and then stopping.
Some realistic options: scatter their dinner on the lawn and let them hunt it. Hide a toy and send them to find it. Teach them to carry the shopping bag or fetch the paper. Practise a new trick each week. Add obstacles on your walk like a log to balance on or a bench to weave around.
Then teach the other half of the job: switching off. Place training gives a high-drive dog a clear way to settle. Work without rest just builds an athlete who can't relax.
What to Try Today
Skip the bowl tonight. Take your dog's dinner outside, scatter a handful across a patch of grass, and let them sniff it out. Do it again with the next handful in a different spot. It takes five minutes, costs nothing, and gives that brain a proper shift. Watch how they settle afterwards. That's the difference between tired legs and a satisfied dog.
This is one piece of the puzzle. If your dog's behaviour is intense, reactive or getting worse, a bit of enrichment won't be enough on its own, and that's okay. Getting the right plan matters more than a quick fix.
