Can Place Training Help With Separation Anxiety in Dogs?
Here's the part nobody tells you about separation anxiety: the work doesn't start when you leave the house. It starts while you're home. If your dog can't be calm three metres away from you while you make a coffee, they've got no chance of being calm when you're gone for three hours.
Why Does My Dog Panic When I Leave?
A dog that follows you from room to room all day isn't being loyal. They're practising dependence. Every hour spent glued to your ankles is a rehearsal of one idea: I'm only okay when I'm next to you. The meltdown at the front door is just the endpoint of a habit that's been running since breakfast.
And let's be clear about what you're seeing. Separation anxiety is panic, not naughtiness. The chewed doorframe, the howling the neighbours complain about, the drool-soaked crate: that's a dog in genuine distress. Punishing it will only make the fear worse.
What Does Place Training Actually Teach?
On the surface, Place is simple. Your dog goes to a bed or mat, stays on it, and settles until you release them. Underneath, it's teaching something much bigger: you can be calm without touching me.
On Place, your dog can see you but can't shadow you. That gap between you is the whole lesson. It's separation with training wheels: metres instead of hours, minutes instead of a full workday.
How Do You Use Place to Build Independence?
Start small. Send your dog to Place while you're in the same room, reward calm, and release them before they break. Then add movement: walk to the kitchen and back. Step out of sight for two seconds and return before they worry. You're proving the same point over and over: I leave, I come back, nothing bad happens.
Keep your departures and arrivals boring, too. A dramatic goodbye and an excited reunion tell your dog that you leaving is a big event. It isn't. Act like it.
What to Try Today
Tonight, while you watch TV, send your dog to their bed with a chew instead of letting them lie on your feet. Aim for ten calm minutes, then release them with a quiet word. That small gap is the first brick in the wall.
One honest caveat: Place training is one piece of the puzzle, not a cure. True separation anxiety is complex, and severe cases need a structured plan, sometimes with vet support alongside training. That's exactly what we do at Walkys Dog Training Academy. Our 1:1 sessions and group programs build calm, independent dogs step by step. Visit walkys.com.au and let's get started.
