Marker Training: Why "Yes" Is the Most Powerful Word in Dog Training
Most owners pour all their energy into the command. Sit. Down. Heel. They say it louder, slower, more times. But your dog doesn't learn from the command. He learns from the split second after he gets it right. Miss that moment and the smartest cue in the world means nothing.
What is a marker word?
A marker is a single sound that means "that exact thing you just did earned you a reward." Most trainers use "yes." It is a promise, not a command. The word marks the precise behaviour you want, then the food follows. Think of it like taking a photo of the right moment so your dog knows what paid off.
Why does timing beat repetition?
Dogs live in the now. If your dog sits and you fumble for a treat three seconds later, you haven't rewarded the sit. You've rewarded whatever he did three seconds later, which is usually standing back up.
The marker closes that gap. You say "yes" the instant his bum hits the floor, and the reward can arrive a moment later with no confusion. The word buys you time, and it tells your dog exactly which choice paid off.
How do you charge the marker?
Before "yes" can teach anything, it has to mean something. This is called charging the marker, and it takes about two minutes a day. Say "yes" in a calm, clear voice, then immediately deliver a small piece of food. Pause. Repeat. Do this ten to fifteen times.
Keep at it for a few days until your dog's head snaps around the moment he hears the word. Now "yes" has real value, and you can use it to mark any behaviour you like.
What to try today
Grab ten pieces of your dog's food and sit somewhere quiet with no distractions. Say "yes," then feed. Wait a beat, then do it again. Keep your tone the same every time so the word stays clean and clear.
Tomorrow, ask for a sit, mark the moment his bum touches the floor with "yes," then feed. You'll see him start to offer the behaviour faster, because now he knows exactly what worked.
